St John’s Smith Square : Portrait of a friendship

Sunday 3rd of March, 2019 : St John’s Smith Square

Programme:

Bennett
String Quartet in G
Mendelssohn
String Quartet in A minor Op. 13
Smyth
String Quartet in E minor

The Villiers Quartet perform a concert of music featuring works by composers who were all affiliated with Leipzig Conservatory during the Romantic Era: the British composer William Sterndale Bennett, his friend Felix Mendelssohn, and the suffragette and composer Ethel Smyth.

Both Sterndale Bennett and Mendelssohn spent considerable amounts of time in Leipzig, and Mendelssohn was inspired by his travels to England and Scotland. The two composers admired each other greatly.

Included in the programme is the rarely performed String Quartet in E minor by Ethel Smyth (1858 – 1944), a spellbinding work that deserves a higher profile. True to their form, the Villiers Quartet continue to promote works from the rich musical tradition of British repertoire.

£16 Standard, £10 Concession
