The VQ had a fantastic Music FOCUS day with students at IntoUniversity Hammersmith earlier this month.  Students got to see how we worked together as a quartet to make music (it's all about TEAMWORK!), they got to try out different stringed instruments, and they wrote & performed their own compositions, all in a day's work!  Well done to all the students for participating, and thank you to IntoUniversity for a great time!

You can see pictures of the day at IntoUniversity's website links:

VQ goes online to decide finalists in New Works Competition

February 9, 2012

As part of their London concert series, the Villiers Quartet presents the online VQ New Works Competition for pieces written for string quartet. This is the first classical music competition of its kind to allow the audience to publicly vote for the winner.

Recognising the limited opportunities for young composers to have their works performed by a professional ensemble, the Villiers Quartet developed their competition with the goal of finding new ways to share contemporary music. Going online was the most obvious choice, and this 21st century music competition adds a digital element to the VQ's more traditional music residency of 6 concerts at St. Andrew's Church in Fulham, London.

After placing a call for entries online, the Villiers Quartet received over 50 entries worldwide, including composers from Hong Kong, Tel Aviv, Chicago, Los Angeles, Australia, and entrants from all over the British Isles. As part of the judging process, the quartet will record one movement from 6 finalists and place them on their website (www.villiersquartet.com/2012competition) for an online vote starting March 5th, 2012. Voting will be open to the public for one month.

The top 3 finalists with the most votes will have their works performed live in the final round by the Villiers Quartet on April 29th, 2012 at St. Andrew's Church, London. Conductor and violinist Thomas Kemp will host the proceedings, and the concert will be streamed over the Internet.

In this final round, the winner will be decided at the concert by audience vote. They will receive a cash prize of £500, a studio recording of their piece, and the performance of their work by the Villiers Quartet for upcoming seasons.
