After a successful world premiere of Alexander Goehr’s String Quartet no.5 “Vision of the Soldier Er” at the Swaledale Festival in June 2019, the VQ took on a challenging programme of performing the complete string quartets by Goehr at the renowned Music@Malling Festival in September 2019.
A pupil of Olivier Messiaen in the 1950’s and a contemporary of Sir Peter Maxwell Davies and Sir Harrison Birtwistle, Alexander Goehr is a celebrated contemporary composer, academic and teacher. This series of concerts ‘A Life in Music’ included performances of his five string quartets performed by the Villiers Quartet, alongside the Fantasias of Henry Purcell and poetry read by Gabriel Levin.
The VQ is excited to perform the quartets of Goehr extensively as the “Goehr Project” and is looking to collaborate with musicians and pupils around the world who are inspired and influenced by Goehr in this century.
